Tackling the overuse of antibiotics in pig production (colistin)

Problem: Overuse of antibiotics in pig production (colistin); threat of Post-weaning disease (PWD). Colistin is use as prophylaxis and therapeutic, as well as in growth promotion.

Project: Reducing the use of colistin in agriculture by implementing alternative interventions (including vaccination, use of less-critical alternative antibiotics to colistin and zinc oxide)

Participants: Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), medium- and large-scale farms in Vietnam, veterinarians, local facilitators

Expected output:

  • Evidence that reduced use of colistin in pig production is feasible and economical for farmers, with viable alternatives.
  • Policy recommendations and changes.
