Community-driven antimicrobial stewardship programme in Kosovo

Community engagement and antimicrobial stewardship in Kosovo

This impact case study details how a community-driven antimicrobial stewardship programme in Kosovo was implemented, leading to more responsible antimicrobial use practices.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a pressing issue in Kosovo’s healthcare landscape, compounded by misinformation, self-prescription, and systemic barriers in primary care. Recognising the urgent need for action, the ICARS-supported project, Addressing Antibiotic Overuse through Continuous Quality Improvement, has taken a proactive stance in addressing these challenges through a robust Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programme.

In an effort to curb inappropriate antibiotic use, particularly for acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), the project has pioneered the implementation of an AMS programme across primary healthcare facilities. A crucial aspect of this initiative has been the inclusion of community representatives in shaping stewardship efforts, a key move ensuring AMR awareness extends beyond healthcare professionals and fosters a collective response.
