Funding partners provide essential financial support to ICARS and to the organisation’s activities.
Governments, international institutions, and foundations that provide earmarked funding for specific projects, regions, or focus areas are engaged as Funding Partners. Â These partnerships often emphasise an AMR thematic or regional focus on the implementation of solutions.
Governments and foundations that commit to multi-year contributions (3+ years) are recognised as Strategic Funding Partners. In addition to their financial support, these partners contribute to ICARS’ strategic direction through representation on the Board of Directors.
The Government of Denmark established ICARS in late 2018 with a mission to partner with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in co-developing sustainable, context-specific solutions to address AMR. In 2025, Denmark committed to continued core funding to ICARS from 2027 through 2030, underscoring the country’s continued dedication to mitigating AMR in the countries with the highest burden. Denmark remains ICARS’ largest source of core funding.
In 2024, Wellcome committed a significant grant over five years to strengthen ICARS’ work in Africa. This funding will support implementation of National Action Plans on AMR in partnership with ministries and local stakeholders across the continent, ensuring that solutions are context-specific and sustainable. The grant also supports the establishment of ICARS’ regional presence in Africa, a major milestone in addressing AMR on the continent.
ICARS’ collaboration with GAMRIF began in October 2021 with a project led by Porkcolombia to identify barriers to diagnostic service uptake in the Colombian swine industry.
Since 2025, DHSC has funded a joint International Research Development Centre (IDRC)- and ICARS-led project focused on addressing AMR in the Caribbean region. The work takes place in close collaboration with local stakeholders using a One Health approach. The findings will provide a comprehensive overview of current AMR prevention and control efforts, highlighting strategies, gaps, and opportunities for future research and innovation in the region. The insights will assist with prioritising and developing an agenda for improving AMR policies, practices, and research with a human health focus and connections to other One Health sectors (e.g. agriculture and agri-food) across the Caribbean.
ICARS is a partner in the EUP OHAMR, a 10-year research and innovation programme that brings together 53 organisations across 30 countries.
The partnership aims to invest €250 million to support research to prevent the emergence and spread of AMR, strengthen appropriate use of antimicrobials and infection prevention and control and provide innovative and cost-effective treatment options for resistant infections.
Within this framework, ICARS contributes implementation research expertise especially from low- and middle-income settings, to support capacity strengthening and evidence to policy translation across the One-Health spectrum.  Â
ICARS and IDRC have collaborated since 2021 to address gender and AMR research gaps. Joint scoping roundtables informed a Request for Proposals, leading to a one-year project led by the Human Sciences Research Council in South Africa to advance gender equality and social inclusion in LMIC AMR research. This work culminated in the publication of a resource titled ‘Practical pathways to integrating gender and equity consideration in AMR research’.
In 2024, a new project was launched through the UK Department of Health and Social Care and IDRC’s InnoVet- 2.0AMR programme. This initiative aims to find solutions for integrating AMR into global challenges, focusing on two main areas: gender and equity, and climate change. The first stream pilots the integration of a gender and equity lens into AMR innovation, intervention and implementation research, building on the previously published resource, while also sharing the learnings from this process. The second stream describes the interlinkages between AMR and climate change and supports pilot projects that test solutions and technologies addressing both challenges.
Furthermore, see above about the DHSC-grant work that IDRC and ICARS partner on in the Caribbean region.
ICARS welcomes new Strategic Funding Partners and Funding Partners to partner with us to advance our collective impact on AMR. Together with LMICs, we can drive sustainable implementation of context-specific interventions that strengthen capacity and resilience, and reinforce health and agrifood systems worldwide, while addressing the interconnected challenges of AMR, climate change, and environmental health.
If your government, foundation, or institution is interested in  partnering with us, we invite you to connect with our team to explore opportunities for collaboration.
