Antimicrobial stewardship efforts drive national AMR policy integration in Georgia

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to public health in Georgia. The ICARS and WHO Europe-supported project, “Optimising the use of antibiotics for Surgical Antibiotic Prophylaxis”, aimed to address one key aspect of AMR: the inappropriate use of antibiotics in surgical settings. Focused on low and medium-risk surgeries, such as surgical repair of hernias, hip joint surgery, replacement of damaged joints with implants, and Caesarean sections, the project not only worked to improve antibiotic use but also played a role in influencing Georgia’s national policy on AMR.

This impact case study details how this project directly influenced Georgia’s National Action Plan for AMR, and showcases how coordinated efforts can contribute to broader system strengthening.
