About
Dr. Akwar is a Science Advisor at ICARS, responsible for the development and management of ICARS’ portfolio of projects with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). He brings over 15 years of experience as an infectious disease epidemiologist working for various international organizations with a focus on LMICs as well as working for the Canadian public health services. Prior to this position, he worked for the Global Center for Health Diplomacy and Inclusion as a policy and research advisor and previously worked for other international organizations (World Organization for Animal Health, International Vaccine Institute, and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), focusing on countries in Africa and Asia.
Dr. Akwar holds a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Guelph, Canada with thesis on AMR at the animal-human-environment interface. He also holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria.
