AMR expert Timothy Walsh joins ICARS as Independent Chief Scientific Consultant

The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) is delighted to announce the engagement of Professor Timothy Walsh as Independent Chief Scientific Consultant. In this role, he will collaborate closely with ICARS’ Director of Science, Dr Kristina Osbjer, and the Executive Management team to strengthen ICARS’ scientific excellence in AMR research and oversee the portfolio of ICARS-supported intervention and implementation research projects in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Tim brings over three decades of groundbreaking research experience in AMR. His pioneering work has been instrumental in understanding the global spread of resistance mechanisms, particularly in critical priority pathogens. His research has directly influenced international policy and intervention strategies to address AMR.

“Joining ICARS represents an extraordinary opportunity to translate scientific knowledge into real-world solutions, not least for low- and middle-income countries where the burden of AMR is highest” says Tim. “I look forward to collaborating with Dr Osbjer and the Science Team to enhance ICARS’ research portfolio and international status as well as support our partners in implementing evidence-based AMR solutions. What drew me to ICARS was the ethos and credibility of the ICARS team that underpins ICARS’ mission – working directly with LMICs to co-develop and implement tailored solutions that address their specific AMR challenges.”

Throughout his distinguished career, Tim has led numerous international research collaborations across Asia, Africa, and South America. His work has been particularly focused on understanding AMR transmission patterns between humans, animals, and the environment – a One Health approach that mirrors ICARS’ holistic vision for addressing AMR.

Dr Kristina Osbjer, Director of Science at ICARS, welcomes the engagement, saying:

“Professor Walsh’s expertise and international experience will be a valuable asset to our Science Team. His extensive research background, working with LMICs, and deep understanding of the complex challenges of tackling AMR in these settings will strengthen our ability to deliver impactful solutions across our growing portfolio of nearly 50 projects.”

In his role as Independent Chief Scientific Consultant, Tim will collaborate with the Science Team to ensure ICARS-supported projects continue to deliver evidence-based, contextually appropriate solutions.

“AMR is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time,” Professor Walsh emphasizes. “ICARS’ commitment to supporting countries in developing tailored, sustainable solutions is crucial – not least, in understanding how gender and healthcare inequity, poverty, conflict, access, and supply chains mitigate our global efforts in tackling AMR. I’m excited to join the team in their efforts to strengthen countries’ capacity to effectively and sustainably address AMR.”

This engagement reinforces ICARS’ commitment to bridging the gap between scientific research and practical implementation. Tim’s expertise will complement the organization’s leadership team and enhance ICARS’ ability to support countries in developing evidence-based, context-specific solutions to AMR – a core element of ICARS’ mission to deliver tangible impact in the global mitigation of antimicrobial resistance.
