Tackling antimicrobial resistance in the Cambodian poultry sector via improved husbandry practices and prudent antimicrobial use – ICARS

Tackling antimicrobial resistance in the Cambodian poultry sector via improved husbandry practices and prudent antimicrobial use

This poster, originally presented at the 2025 ReAct Asia Pacific Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance, outlines plans for a project aiming to reduce antibiotic use by 20% in small- and medium-scale native broiler production through improved husbandry practices and adherence to prudent antimicrobial use (AMU) guidelines.

The project will:

  • Assess baseline data on animal husbandry, biosecurity, AMU, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and behavioural drivers and barriers among farmers and service providers.
  • Develop and deliver interventions, including good broiler husbandry practices (GBHP) and prudent use of antimicrobials (PUG) through training, sensitisation, and coaching.
  • Evaluate interventions for effectiveness, fidelity, appropriateness, socio-behavioural acceptability, and cost-benefit outcomes.
  • Inform policy and practice by providing recommendations, guidelines, and assessing certification feasibility for scaling up good poultry practices.
  • Disseminate findings to stakeholders across the poultry value chain to support sustainable adoption and broader impact.
