Antimicrobial Resistance in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: ICARS’ tailored approach.
Since its inception in 2019, ICARS has forged partnerships with several Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), initiating funded projects dedicated to addressing AMR across Africa, South America, and Asia. These projects have involved close collaboration with a diverse array of resourceful funding and implementation partners, all aligned with our central mission: supporting LMICs in their effort to reduce drug-resistant infections. This support is achieved through co-development of tailored solutions leading to implementation on the ground and facilitated by ICARS’ funding and expertise, while building upon the foundation of AMR National Action Plans (NAPs).
This policy brief offers an account of ICARS’ journey to date. It includes an introduction to the concept of AMR, the challenges it poses, and the background surrounding AMR mitigation. Additionally, it outlines ICARS’ key actions and policy recommendations employed when partnering with LMICs for the implementation of AMR NAPs, drawing insights from our diverse project portfolio. Finally, it provides a practical framework for the implementation of evidence-based, country-specific, sustainable AMR mitigation solutions, illustrating each step with examples drawn from past and ongoing ICARS projects.
