IPC Implementation in Colombian ICUs: Key Findings

The non-linear nature of infection prevention and control (IPC) implementation: social and structural dynamics in Colombian public ICUs

The poster presents findings from a qualitative study exploring how infection prevention and control (IPC) is implemented in Colombian public ICUs, highlighting that implementation is not linear but shaped by complex social and structural dynamics. Through interviews with healthcare workers, the study found that hierarchy, professional authority, and team norms strongly influence how IPC practices are interpreted and applied in daily care. While national policies and guidelines exist, their consistent implementation is constrained by limited oversight, staffing shortages, and resource limitations, leading to selective adherence under pressure. The findings emphasise that effective IPC interventions must be designed to align with real-world clinical workflows, accounting for both the practical constraints and the social dynamics that influence behaviour in high-pressure healthcare settings.
