Combating antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial residues in the Zambian poultry sector
This presentation, originally presented at the 2022 ReAct Africa and South Centre Conference, shares plans for a project to combat antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial residues in the Zambian poultry sector.
Project overview
A rise in consumer demand for poultry meat in Zambia has increased production, which, combined with poor farm management, widespread and unregulated use of antimicrobials, and a lack of veterinary guidelines, has raised concerns about food safety.
This project targets key stakeholders involved in antimicrobial use, including prescribers, sellers, and end users, through training, sensitisation, and the development of poultry treatment guidelines for veterinary professionals. These interventions aim to promote prudent antimicrobial use, reduce drug residues, and combat AMR, ultimately improving food safety and leading to safer chicken meat, eggs, and feed. The expected outcomes include better knowledge and practices around AMU and AMR, more rational antimicrobial use, reduced residues, and insights into the economic impact to support long-term sustainability and scale-up.
