Optimising vaccination and biosecurity regimes to enhance the fight against antimicrobial resistance in commercial poultry production in Tanzania
This presentation, originally presented at the 2022 ReAct Africa and South Centre Conference, outlines a project aimed at reducing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within Tanzania’s commercial poultry sector.
Project overview
The increase of poultry production has heightened the risk of disease outbreaks and led to widespread, often non-prudent, antimicrobial use. This practice not only raises the risk of AMR in poultry but also poses a threat to human health through the consumption of contaminated meat and eggs.
The project focuses on improving vaccination and biosecurity in poultry production to prevent disease, reducing the need for antimicrobials. This approach leads to safer poultry products with fewer drug residues and helps lower the risk of AMR.
By reducing antimicrobial use (AMU) and improving poultry health, the project aims to lower AMR risks, enhance food safety, and produce healthier poultry products. Expected outcomes include improved farmer behaviour, increased demand for quality inputs, and improved stakeholder knowledge for sustainable implementation of vaccination and biosecurity measures.
