Factors influencing the frequency, knowledge, attitudes and practices of antibiotic use in commercial layer chicken farms, Tanzania

This study investigates factors influencing knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to antibiotic use among commercial layer chicken farmers in Tanzania. Using a cross-sectional survey of 205 farmers from Unguja, Morogoro, and Dar es Salaam, the researchers assessed antibiotic usage patterns and associated demographic and farm-related factors. The findings revealed widespread and often inappropriate antibiotic use, with nearly all farmers administering antibiotics for treatment, prevention, or productivity enhancement, and most failing to observe withdrawal periods. Knowledge and practice levels regarding antibiotic use were generally low to moderate, while attitudes were relatively higher. Antibiotic use patterns and stewardship were significantly influenced by farmers’ age, education level, farm scale, and geographic location.

Overall, the study highlights substantial gaps in antibiotic stewardship among layer farmers and underscores the need for targeted, multifaceted interventions to promote responsible antibiotic use and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance.
