Knowledge, attitudes and practices of veterinary professionals on antimicrobial resistance: A baseline survey in Copperbelt and Lusaka Provinces, Zambia
This poster, originally presented at the 2025 ReAct Africa and South Centre Conference, shares results from a baseline Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey conducted in Zambia’s Copperbelt and Lusaka Provinces. The survey aimed to assess veterinary professionals’ awareness, attitudes, and behaviours regarding antimicrobial resistance (AMR), identifying gaps and opportunities for targeted interventions.
Findings revealed that just over half (54%) of the respondents demonstrated good knowledge of antibiotics and AMR, with those in the Copperbelt performing better than the Lusaka based professionals. 60% of all respondents (63% in Copperbelt and 37% in Lusaka) achieved good attitude scores in relation to AMR, with the vast majority strongly agreeing to the importance of correct disposal of antimicrobials, biosecurity and withdraw period in poultry farming. Additionally, 52% of all respondents (58% in Copperbelt and 42% in Lusaka) received a good score in relation to practices.
Although most professionals showed a basic understanding of AMR, notable knowledge gaps and misconceptions remained. Many expressed a willingness to support antimicrobial stewardship but faced challenges such as limited resources and the absence of clear guidelines. These findings underscore the urgent need for national strategies to improve AMR awareness and promote responsible antimicrobial use within Zambia’s veterinary sector.
